Automated Coolant Applicator

This project is from the Dec 1999/Jan 2000 issue of Machinist's Workshop article by Glenn Wilson titled "An Automated Coolant Adapter". It was built as close to Glenn's specifications as I was capable and it seems to work OK. This slick little device shoots a tiny pulse of coolant about one foot and can be aimed at the point where the tool is cutting. It makes very judicious use of coolant. Very fussy to get just the right tension on the nozzle check valve. It is a very fine balance between not leaking when the unit is off to still opening properly when on and pulsed. Brass parts oxidized over time from water based coolant, so am working on a formula for an WD40 base fluid with added coolant. The WD40 has to be thickened slightly to prevent dripping. This project took about 2 weeks to complete.

All the parts. Assempled container, pump and nozzle.
