File Rack

This file rack design was inspired by a tip many years ago in the Chips $ Sparks section of the Nov/Dec 1992 issue of Home Shop Machinist magazine. The tip from Arnold Gregrich, was to make a vertical rack for file storage from pieces of 1" square thinwall tubing. The tubes were welded on the corners to form a stack of diamond shaped tubes that could then be conveniently mounted on the end of your work bench. It seemed like a lot for just a file rack, so I kept the idea in mind. I recently thought again of the idea and decided to make something similar from schedule 40 PVC pipe.
Yep, wood and plastic. Not a bit of metal in it other than a few screws. The plastic seemed like a good idea, and be a little kinder to the file edges. Files need special care for storage, not just piled up in a tool drawer like mine have been getting dulled a little each time they are removed for use or placed back in storage.
As it turned out, my idea took a whole lot more time to build than Arnold's. If I had to do it over again, I'd just weld one up out of square tubing!
