Spindle Sander Cabinet

Updated 01/10/07

I purchased a Delta Spindle Sander in the fall of 2006 and needed a base cabinet to use it on. Along the way I decided to design this cabinet as central storage for all my sanding supplies.

I gathered my sanding supplies from all over the shop. With a little layout exercise, I was able to determine that everything would easily fit in an 18" square cabinet at the needed height for use under the spindle sander. I designed 3 drawers for the sanding supplies. The top drawer was sized to hold a collection of sanding sleeves for the spindle sander. The largest center drawer would be built just like a file drawer and use the inexpensive hanging folders to sort and store sanding sheets. The bottom drawer would use the remaining cabinet space for sanding belts. I made the drawer so that a 2-3/4" tray the same size as the drawer would lay on top of the drawer and be used to hold my collection of sanding disks.

I used some cheap China grade 3/4" plywood for the case and drawer fronts. Sure wish I'd chosen a little better grade of plywood for these parts. It really shows in the final finish. There were many blemishes in the core plys requiring edge filling on the drawer fronts. The surface veneer was extremely thin, about .015", leaving little room for errors and sanding. Live and learn on today's materials.
